This poetry collection is based on the story of a Catholic mother, seriously ill in hospital. While she is semi-conscious, a priest forces her to renounce her daughter, who is then adopted. Despite searching for the rest of her life, the mother never sees her daughter again. These poems bring into focus the mother’s vulnerability, her hospitalisation, and her despair at the forced removal of her daughter. Too late, and after her mother’s death, the daughter eventually finds her birth family.

… the subtlety and joy of [the] poetry … [Sheila uses] sensitive but direct language that lays bare this scandal personified in this poor individual. It lingers in me but ultimately I found it up-lifting.
